'A Mixed Response'
Glynnis Carter
Born in Walthamstow, North London in 1949, Glynnis lived, studied and worked in the North East from 1967 - 2000.
She gained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2004, having studied part time at Newcastle College, Northumbria University and Sunderland University.
In 2000 she moved to Alston in Cumbria. The North Pennine landscape is the main inspiration for her work.
"My paintings are a response to the landscape rather than a realistic representation of it and are made from mixed media, often incorporating organic materials and fragments of canvas that has previously been left outside. The bright colours are a reference to non degradable plastic waste in the environment.
Creating interesting textures and a sense of space is important to me and it is these concerns that drive the painting process."
"Authenticity in landscape art is a transcription not of 'nature' but of subjective responses which often involve a process of sustained direct contact with the chosen site ....."
