'Waters Edge'

Textiles

Waters Edge is the latest showcase of my textile work which is largely inspired by the Cumbrian landscape and in particular the meeting point of water and land whether it be lake, sea or stream.

It continues my interest in exploring the sculptural and raised surface
possibilities of textiles and is particularly suited to the venue of
High Head Sculpture Valley.

The effects I achieve have arisen from wide ranging experiments with
traditional and contemporary  textile  techniques though the focus is
mainly upon feltmaking and ragwork.  I enjoy contrasts and often use the
warmth and denseness of wool to envelop cool, rigid shapes of glass or
wood.

My enthusiasm for textiles arises from an absorption with colour,
texture and form. I am also interested in promoting sustainable issues
and this has a bearing upon the materials I use.

Where possible I try to work with reclaimed materials. It is one of the
most challenging aspects of my work and although it can impose
restrictions I experience great satisfaction in developing or adapting
techniques that extend the use of redundant textiles. Reused textiles
are often combined with sustainable materials such as wool, silk, cotton.

Many of my designs are inspired by natural forms and landscapes. Ideas
often arise from reflection on the movement of water or land formations
in the Lake District and the Cumbrian Coast, where I live.
