Derek
Eland
'North Cumbrian Paintings'

Derek Eland, who was born in Cumbria and now lives near Penrith, is a contemporary landscape artist who has exhibited his work nationally.
Derek looks for tension and patterns within his local landscape, which he highlights with strong dark lines, stark black and white images and occasional slabs of colour. His work is increasingly focused on the intrusion of the built environment into our countryside, including the unstoppable growth of cities and towns. This is the central theme of his current MA in Contemporary Fine Art at the University of Cumbria and of this exhibition. Derek has held a number of successful solo exhibitions at High Head Gallery and in 2007 his work was short-listed for the Celeste Art Prize.
